Some worry about Causeway's impact on rally

Published October 28, 2006

TIKI ISLAND — Galveston area business and civic leaders fear the southbound lanes of Interstate 45 at the entrance of the Galveston Causeway could make accidents more likely.

“This is a dangerous situation,” said Galveston businessman Johnny Maisel. “The lane markings are in a zigzag pattern, and there needs to be signage marking the sharp curve at the southbound entrance of the causeway.

“What makes matters worse is the fact we are getting ready to host the Lone Star Bike Rally in a couple of weeks, and we are going to have thousands of bikes coming through that area and across the highway.”

But officials with the Texas Department of Transportation say the lanes are marked using new technology and safety standards. They also say that traffic studies show the signage is adequate.

Department spokesman Norm Wigington said the lane markings involve the use of raised markers instead of the traditional white and yellow lines being painted on the highway.

“Studies have shown that these are a lot more visible and safer, particularly during inclement weather,” he said.

Wigington also said extensive traffic studies were done during the recent construction to make sure the proper signage is in place.

Maisel said representatives of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce and Tiki Island sent letters to the Department of Transportation several weeks ago expressing concern, but have not received any answers.

Wigington promised to find out why local officials had not received an official response.
