Stings garner honors at annual football banquet

TEXAS CITY — At last week’s Texas City football banquet, several top players were honored with awards and scholarships.
New head football coach Leland Surovik was introduced to the crowd and gave a speech, and assistant athletic director Tony Willis was the host of the evening.
The Dixie Walker Jr. team MVP award was presented to sophomore receiver Armanti Foreman.
The inaugural Dixie Walker scholarship was created to give $1,500 to a senior who has a desire to continue his education while playing sports in college. The award was presented on behalf of the Walker family and Emken-Linton Funeral Home to senior inside linebacker Ryan Higgins.
Higgins also was given the Defensive MVP award by defensive coordinator Lance Dale and the Leading Tackler Award by Farley Owens.
Offensive coordinator Chad Butler presented the Offensive MVP Award to sophomore quarterback Andrew Allen. Special teams coordinator Chad Carner presented the Special Teams MVP to Hunter Wallen and D’Onta Foreman. The Defensive Lineman of the Year was Colby Johnson, and the Offensive Linemen of the Year were Michael Franklin and Tyler O’Neal.
The Hector Jimenez Sportsmanship Award went to James Dean, the Artie Wason Fighting Heart Award went to Avery Fuller and William Stark, the Wayne Froeschl Most Improved Player Award went to Marcus Quinn and Savon Caldwell, and the Texas City QB Club JV Team MVPs were Lawrence Valdez and Jordan Coffee.
