It’s time to party – Mardi Gras style

It’s Mardi Gras time, so laissez les bon temps rouler. There already have been a variety of events, but here is a list of standout events you don’t want to miss:
• The Rotary Club of Texas City will have its second annual Mardi Gras on the Mainland Gala at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Charles T. Doyle Convention Center, 2010 Fifth Ave. N., in Texas City.

• Krewe d’Espirit Rosaire will have its annual Mardi Gras pageant at 8 p.m. and ball at 9 p.m. Saturday in Expo A at Moody Gardens, 1 Hope Blvd., in Galveston.

• The American Music Award’s Sprint New Artist of the Year, Hot Chelle Rae, will perform at 10 p.m. Saturday at Saengerfest Park, 22nd Street and The Strand, in Galveston.
The band’s sophomore album, “Whatever,” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and features the hit song “I Like It Like That.”

• The Beta Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will have its 26th annual Mardi Gras Ball scholarship fundraiser from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Feb. 17 at the Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Ave. M, in Galveston.

• The 28th annual Mardi Gras Ball and Parade Viewing Party at The Tremont House will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row in Galveston.
The party will salute “The Golden Era of Motown.” Guests will get to enjoy a special appearance by The Legacy of The Temptations, presented by Legends in Concert.
Tickets include an open bar, food buffet and live music performed by three bands, including New Orleans’ Dr. Michael White Jazz Quartet. Attire is black tie or Motown glamor-themed costumes.

Couples Set To Renew Wedding Vows
More than a dozen couples will celebrate Valentine’s Day early by participating in a special Wedding Vow Renewal at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hotel Galvez & Spa, 2024 Seawall Blvd., in Galveston.
Of the couples registered, two will celebrate their 30th and one will celebrate their 20th anniversary.
Justice of the Peace Jim Schweitzer will officiate the ceremony, which is free and open to the public.
Special Celebration Of Love
Keep Dickinson Beautiful will celebrate 25 years with a Special Celebration of Love from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 4132 E. 17th St., in Dickinson.

Music Lovers Are In For A Treat
The Galveston Music Club will present youth performing Compositions of African Heritage at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church, 2013 Broadway, in Galveston.
Admission is free and open to the public.
And, jazz instrumentalist Chris Botti will take the stage with his seven-piece band at 4 p.m. Sunday at The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice St., in Galveston.
Botti has performed with Frank Sinatra, Josh Groban, Sting, Paul Simon and John Mayer.

Locals Set To Appear On TV
Local historian and proprietor of Stringfellow Orchards in Hitchcock Samuel Collins III will be one of the featured stories on the TV show Texas Country Reporter at 5 p.m. Saturday on KHOU Channel 11. Ball High graduate, Dacia James, who is a professional dancer and choreographer, will perform with Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson at the BET Honors Awards, honoring First Lady Michelle Obama at 8 p.m. Monday on Black Entertainment Television.
