Plenty to see, do at Moody Gardens

With gas prices near $4 a gallon and air travel more expensive than ever, many people are staying closer to home when it comes to vacation.

Is Jimmy John’s back for seconds?

Two-timing: Is franchisee Brent Bunz looking to stack on the island sandwich shops? It’s sure looking that way.

Those in the know say Bunz has selected a site for a second Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches in Galveston. Rumor has it Bunz will open the second eatery at 6302 Seawall Blvd., in a gray building that has, for months, piqued the curiosity of islanders.

Neel Shah Hospitality owns the freshly built retail building, west of 61st Street.

If the rumors are true, the island will be home to two of the popular sandwich shops.

Last month, Bunz signed a lease with Mitchell Historic Properties that would allow him to build a 1,500-square-foot eatery next to Starbucks at 102 22nd St. in the island’s downtown.

The downtown Jimmy John’s is planned east of Starbucks and will rise on space now used for parking. Jimmy John’s will lease the property and building from Mitchell Historic Properties.

Officials with Mitchell Historic Properties said there will be plenty of parking for both Starbucks and Jimmy John’s. No word on construction timelines for either sandwich shop.

Nineteen-year-old Jimmy John Liautaud launched the concept in 1983 in Charleston, Ill., after using cookbooks he checked out of the local library to perfect the award-winning bread for which the chain is known.

Along with the bread, the 1,200-store chain is known for using all fresh ingredients, offering fast service, reasonable prices, an irreverent attitude and for what it doesn’t use — additives and vegetable-based fillers. Want to talk about it? Visit Buzz Blog, galvnews.com.

A different Jimmy’s: What’s the best part of waking up? Breakfast over the Gulf of Mexico, perhaps. Jimmy’s on the Pier, the popular new restaurant at Galveston Fishing Pier, 9001 Seawall Blvd. on the island, now is open seven days a week, serving breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.

The indoor/outdoor eatery is getting rave reviews in publications across Texas. Jimmy’s on the Pier also serves lunch and dinner.

Owner Annie Willow is offering the program — which uses “Happy Thoughts University” — free with personal coaching to clients receiving salon services at Happy Pretty You.

The program also is available free online at happyprettylife.com as a self-study program with personal coaching via the Internet upon request.

The salon boasts four styling chairs, two pedicure chairs and two manicure chairs. The boutique at the front of the shop offers an assortment of clothes for women and juniors, including T-shirts, blouses, jackets, sweaters and jeans, along with accessories, such as purses and watches.
