Julian Santos Duron, Sr.

LEAGUE CITY —Julian Santos Duron, Sr. a resident of League City and former resident of Galveston, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 4, 2012, at the age of 92. He was born on February 17, 1919 in Gonzales, Texas to Romanita and Santiago Duron.

On October 18, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S Air Force during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. He proudly served with the 13th Air Force Fighter Command until his honorable discharge on January 7, 1946. During his time of service he received the American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal.

Upon returning to Waco, Texas, he met and married the love of his life Carolyn (Mamie) Mancillas. In 1947, Julian and Mamie moved to Galveston Island where he had visited many times as a young boy and always wanted to return. Julian began his career on the Island as a Display Manager for Sears Roebuck and Company until he retired after 37 years of service.

Julian was an active member in several Island community organizations and a long time member and volunteer at Sacred Heart Church. He held several positions in the Woodmen of the World #3365 and American Association of Retired Person (AARP), he was also a member of the Veterans of War Post 880 and American Legion Post 20. But he was most proud of serving as the Boy Scout Master of Troop 114 of Galveston.

Julian loved life and enjoyed traveling with his wife and children throughout the U.S. and overseas. He loved to dance, sing, celebrating holidays and several other special days with his children and grandchildren. If you did not find him watching football or baseball at home, you found him watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the field or the court. He will be truly missed, but will live on through his family and all the wonderful memories he left with everyone whose life he touched.

Julian was preceded in death by his loving wife Carolyn, his grandson Jeffrey Brian Roark and his two sisters Blasita Rodriguez and Hilaria Lopez. He is survived by his eleven children; his sons, Julian Jr. and wife Mary, Henry and wife Donna, Johnny and wife Hilda, Michael and wife Diane, Jimmy and wife Cindy; his daughters, Rosemary and husband Gary Howard, Carolyn and husband Joe Moreno, Marianne and husband George Ruiz, Elizabeth and husband Glen Click, Rebecca and husband Jeff Roark and Victoria Duron; his 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing after 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7th at Malloy & Son Funeral Home in Galveston. A Rosary will be held at 6:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 8th at 11:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church with burial service to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons; Joseph Moreno, Jr., Michael Moreno, Ray Ruiz, Richard Ruiz, James Duron and Christopher Duron. Honorary pallbearer is Jeffrey Brian Roark, Sr.

The family would like to thank Ms. Lolita Bonalos of A&G Personal Provider Services for the loving care she gave to him over the past year and to Dr. Gabriel Rodriguez of Texas City.
