Weather doesn’t stop some anglers

Rain and wind kept most anglers off the water last weekend; however, for one angler, it appeared he had a corner on the market, as other fishermen passed on some great fishing.
Marcos Acevedo felt he had spent enough time cabin-bound in his home in Houston and hit the road for Galveston. With steady wind and rain falling when he arrived Saturday, he knew he had to find protected waters if he was to have a chance to catch some fish.
The protected waters were around Payco Marina near the Causeway. Using dead shrimp for bait fished on the bottom with a tandem leader, Acevedo landed a mix of pan fish and two flounder.
In addition to the flatfish, he took a mixture of 31 whiting, black drum and sand trout to the cleaning table.
The longtime Galveston Bay Angler said he often landed two fish at a time Saturday, and it definitely was one of his best catches in two years. His advice to anglers is not to cancel a trip just because of rain, as some of his best fish have been caught on rainy days.
Night fishing under lights was good for at least one family Saturday night. Patrick Harris and his sons Carl and Sandy fished from their host’s lighted dock on Tiki Island and landed 12 fish that included a mixture of trout and reds.
Unfortunately, only two trout were of legal size to retain. All of the others were released unharmed.
We are in a time of year when weather forecasting probably is least dependable. That is one reason February tends to be a tough month for fishing.
The forecasts do lend encouragement for improved weather as the week progresses. If conditions prove favorable, this would be a good time to give the jetties a try for some early arrivals of large black drum.
It is a little early for the annual drum run; however, the big brutes begin showing in increasing numbers at this time of year. If you do make it out, call in a report and let me know how you fare.
