Weekend anglers finding action

Published January 29, 2012

Saturday’s strong northerly winds kept many anglers off the water, but those who ventured out found some good action along the north shoreline of Lower Galveston Bay.

Before the cold front, lots of fish were caught Friday across a wide area ranging from San Luis Pass to Crystal Beach and included both East and West bays along with the jetties.

Friday, Jamie, a reader, fished the San Luis Pass area with his neighbor and drifted around Mud Cut. Using live shrimp for bait, they landed six trout to 18 inches along with five undersized flounder. Circle hooks were used and made it easy to unhook and release the fish.

Tide levels were very low around the pass, and all of the fish were taken in 4 feet of water. The anglers gave Bastrop Bay a shot and landed only a small speck.

Conditions Friday afternoon were too inviting for Sarah Melcer and her dog Abby to pass up, so they were off to their favorite fishing spots along the jetties.

Using squid for bait, the jetty pros landed a 43-inch bull red, 18-inch black drum, large whiting and the usual hardheads. Water was rough at the end of the South Jetty where the action took place.

Campbell’s Bayou has been holding some nice reds and trout. Friday, Capt. Mark Salazar took his two guests there for some action. The anglers landed six trout to 20 inches and a double-limit of reds to 25 inches while wade fishing the bayou.

Harold North and John Strong fished the shorelines of Virginia Point early Saturday and returned with a Texas Grand Slam, which included a flounder, two slot reds and two specks. Also landed were several whiting and black drum. Live shrimp fished under popping corks was the bait.

Saturday, Campbell’s Bayou again produced a nice catch for Capt. Mark Salazar and his charter — 16 trout to 22 inches and four reds to 27 inches.

Friday night, trout action was good around the lights of Teichman Point. Sandy Lovechild fished docks near the point and landed nine specks and several undersized reds. Free-lined live shrimp was the bait.

Tito at the 61st Street Fishing Pier reported catches of hardheads, gafftop, whiting and bull reds by his customers.
