Tip from a teacher: Connections help

Published January 23, 2012

Each Monday, The Daily News publishes a tip about learning and teaching. If you have a tip you’d like us to consider, send it to newsroom(at)galvnews.com. Please keep it short — no longer than 50 words.

Connections Help With Retention

Creating connections to a student’s prior knowledge is key. Connections to things a student already knows or has experienced help to give him or her a firm foundation of understanding upon which new ideas and facts can be placed. These connections enable the students to understand and retain the new information by making it specifically relevant to them.

Nina Corley is a fourth- and fifth- grade teacher at Satori Elementary School in Galveston.
