Good action during weekend

Published January 22, 2012

Saturday’s conditions were almost perfect for fishing. Aside from low visibility and cool, damp weather, which affected fishermen and not the fish, good action took place all around the Galveston Bay Complex.

Saturday offered prefrontal conditions as a cool front was approaching the coast. Often, that triggers fish to go into a feeding frenzy.

Chocolate Bayou was the scene of some nice catches, especially from near the FM 2004 bridge.

Larry Tyler and Stanley Rogers fished grassy areas up the bayou from the bridge and landed four slot reds, two speckled trout measuring 18 and 22 inches and two flounder. The anglers used soft plastics designed for bass in the form of small lizards.

Charlie Williams found the bayou to be productive for big trout, landing four to 25 inches using live shrimp for bait.

“Bulldog,” Galveston Bait and Tackle, reported good numbers of drum, sheepshead and sand trout on their cleaning table Saturday.

One customer, Jeff Dorman, limited out on speckled trout to 20 inches while fishing the causeway with live shrimp.

Jones Lake produced a lot of reds for Carlos Mendez and Amanda Carpenter, however, most were not keepers.

Using live shrimp fished under popping corks, the couple from Pasadena landed 13 reds with only two being slot reds.

All of the undersized fish were released unharmed.

Moses Lake continues to produce flounder and Jerry Matthews found action on the flatfish near the floodgates.

Matthews used gulps and fresh dead shrimp to land three flounder to 18 inches while tossing back numerous sand trout and small drum.

Carl Summer and his wife fished the surf Friday and had a field day on whiting.

Eighteen to 17 inches was their catch. There was no mention of bait.

Thursday, Wim Beresford fished under the San Luis Pass bridge and had quite a catch. Fifteen sand trout, two sheepshead, two stingrays and a flounder were caught using live shrimp for bait.

Beresford cut up one of the stingrays and continued catching sand trout using pieces of the ray for bait.

Dutch Kueteman sent a note announcing the dates for this year’s Turning Point Tournament.

The annual drum event for the physically disadvantaged is scheduled for March 30-31.
