Group, clinic reach out to stroke patients

GALVESTON — The University of Texas Medical Branch helps patients and their families cope with the major life changes as a result of a stroke.

SANTA FE - Mrs. Helga E. Arvidsson passed from this life Monday morning, January 16, 2012, at the age of 98, in La Marque.

Born August 2, 1913 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Mrs. Arvidsson had been a resident of Santa Fe for over 60 years, having lived three years in Galveston after coming to the United States in 1949. She had been an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women where she was known for taking communion to shut ins and volunteering at Barbara’s House senior day care center. She was a very talented woman and used her gifts to crochet, make afghans and other crafts to be sold at the annual church bazaar.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 29 years, Oscar Arvidsson; her parents, Thorwald and Olga (Jensen) Nielsen; son-in-law, John Messina.

Survivors include her son, Oscar E. Arvidsson and fiancée, Lois Lowry of Santa Fe; daughter, Martha Arvidsson Messina of Dickinson; granddaughter, Kristen Messina and 2 nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Reverend Danny Barrett officiating. A private cremation was conducted under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.
