Group, clinic reach out to stroke patients

GALVESTON — The University of Texas Medical Branch helps patients and their families cope with the major life changes as a result of a stroke.

Chief of staff named 2012 San Luis Salute Honoree

The Diva is pleased to join with Paige and Tilman Fertitta to announce the 2012 San Luis Salute Honoree is Dr. David N. Herndon, chief of staff and director of research at the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Galveston and director of Burns Services at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

David’s the world’s leading authority on the care of patients with severe burns and is an accomplished surgeon, pioneering researcher and dedicated educator.

Proceeds from the San Luis salute will be directed to support the construction of the medical branch’s Jennie Sealy Hospital. Once completed in 2016, this $438 million hospital will be among the leading inpatient facilities in all of academic medicine with 310 patient rooms, 20 state-of-the-art operating suites and a 28-room day surgery center.

Tables are $6,000 for the Premier Circle (table of 10 VIP top tier seating); $5,000 for the Cabaret Circle (table of 10 priority seating); $450 per couple and $225 per person. Momus Ball To Present Duchesses

The Diva also is privileged to announce the Galveston Momus Duchess Shelby Schulz, daughter of Gretchen and Steve Schulz, of Galveston, is a senior at Tufts University where she is majoring in community health and Spanish.

In addition to this island duchess, there are 20 Momus duchesses who also will be formerly presented at the Momus Coronation Ball, each making the legendary Texas bow.

These include: Taylor Adams, Sarah Brock, Katherine Brock, Tessa Del Grande, Maegan Falk, Elizabeth Henrikson, Theresa Hessel, Grace Huffman, Christina Lombana, Kelcy Mayell, Hilary Mundinger, Michelle Nelson, Michi Newall, Christina Routon, Katie Samson, Katie Satterwhite, Allison Smith, Lexie Taggart, Glyn Tower and Mary Kelley Zeleskey.

This year’s coronation ball, themed South Beach, is Feb. 11 at The Grand 1894 Opera House and is chaired by Anouk and Jason Davis.

Party Brings People Together

Collector extraordinaire Randall Jones collected a merry group in his fashionable East End historic home.

Neighbors Mike and Liz Dean, Helen, stunning in black and JD Bashline, Jeannie and CJ Poirier, Kristi Broyles and Marie Kelly visited with longtime buds John Yost, Judge John Campbell and Claire Wilkins. Lyda Ann Thomas, Taylor Thomas, Eliza and Danny Quigley, Elise Stephens and Trey Click, Eve and the recently retired Eddie Monteith enjoying the antics of the Randy’s King Charles spaniels Rafe and Tucker.

BARK In The PARK Dog Show

The second annual BARK in the PARK dog show’s gonna be April 28 in one of Galveston Island’s most popular historic districts — the arboreal Kempner Park, 27th Street and Avenue O.

A phenomenal success last year, this fun, family — and canine-friendly event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All dogs and all breeds (and their families) are welcome.

Vendors will showcase everything from pet supplies to handmade canine gift items. In addition, educational seminars about spay-neuter, microchips and obedience training, etc. will be held.

On-site will be artists, photographers, face painters, a farmers market, terrific booths with family friendly foods, lemonade and so much more.
