Group, clinic reach out to stroke patients

GALVESTON — The University of Texas Medical Branch helps patients and their families cope with the major life changes as a result of a stroke.

Ruie Roland Colbert

Ruie Roland Colbert, 84, died December 2nd at his residence, in Pearland, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. Ruie was born June 19, 1927, in Herod, Illinois. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather to his family. Ruie loved spending time with his family – taking them camping and fishing across the country. He loved fishing for catfish in Trinity, Texas. He learned hand quilting from his mom during winter nights on the farm in Southern Illinois and made beautiful hand quilted quilts for all his family. Ruie had many talents including gardening and carpentry – he built anything from a house and garage to an ice skating rink for his kids. Ruie square danced for many years and after the death of his first wife, Lorraine, square dancing is where he met Janie – his love and support for the past ten years. He was a member of Peace Church Pearland.

Ruie lived in Hammond, Indiana for many years with his family where he was a crane operator at Union Carbide, working in Whiting, Indiana for 25 years and then transferring to Union Carbide in Teaxs City, Texas in 1975. He retired after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 613 in Whiting, Indiana. Ruie served his country in the United States Navy on an aircraft carrier during WWII.

Ruie is survived by his wife, Janie Copeland Colbert, daughters, Jackie (Brad) Hooper of Palacios, Pam Naranjo of Texas City, son Bruce (Patsy) Colbert of Santa Fe, granddaughters, Connie (Scotty) Strahan, Kelly (Ryan) Finnerud, Sarah Naranjo, Jessica Hooper, Kristy Hooper, Grandsons Ricky (Ginger) Vasquez, Adam (Michelle) Hooper, Shawn Naranjo and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine Colbert, sisters Ruth Burkland and Ruby Pinkstaff, parents Alvin and India Colbert and son-in-law Pablo Naranjo, Jr.

Visitation will be held at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, TX on Monday, December 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a service immediately following. Memorials may be made to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030-4123.
