Book planned to chronicle city’s history

Published May 5, 2011

Volunteers with Texas City’s Centennial committee are putting together an updated version of a book that chronicles the city’s 100 years. The committee is soliciting photos from residents of some of the city’s biggest moments.

The book is actually a supplement to “Texas City: Images of the 20th Century,” a historical look at the city that was published in 1999 to mark the completion of the city’s Goals 2000 projects. The supplemental book will focus on the city since 1999.

The committee putting the book together is looking for photos of major and special events that have taken place in the city since 1999.

“We are seeking quality photos, ones with major events special occasions, scenic views of our city or newsworthy items that occurred in or affected Texas City during that time,” Linda Holm, book committee chairwoman said.

Some examples of events include the Texas City Stings winning state in 1999, opening of the Doyle Convention Center in 2000, Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, city memorial services following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the BP explosion in 2005, Hurricane Ike in 2008 or the opening of the Garza Sportsplex in 2010.

People who have original photos from the last 12 years can send copies to the committee. The photos can be saved in an electronic format, but the photos and disks that are submitted will not be returned.

There is also no guarantee the photos submitted will be used in the book, Holm said.

You can email photos to tc100yrs(at)texas-city-tx.org or mail them to the city secretary’s office at 1801 Ninth Avenue North, Texas City, 77590.

Deadline for photo submissions is May 27.
