It’s OK to score with style

As Tim Wright scored the back-breaking fourth quarter touchdown against Corpus Christi Calallen in the Division II-4A state semifinals on Friday night, the La Marque junior running back drew ire from fans of both teams with a little showboating.
After breaking through several Calallen tackles and running past the safeties, Wright looked behind him to see if any defenders nearby when he reached the 10-yard line.
By the time he reached the 5, he had turned completely around and ran the final few steps backward into the end zone. Wright was flagged on the play for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Calallen called the move classless.
Even some La Marque fans were unhappy with the demonstration.
Me — I laughed.
Did the showboating deserve to draw a flag? Probably.
Was it a show of classlessness by Wright?
Not in my opinion. It was just a kid in the excitement of the moment.
People have mentioned Wright’s showboating at times this season. I never had a problem with him doing a Superman pose after touchdowns.
The only showboating I’ve had an issue with was against Manvel in the region finals when Wright did a bit of a jump near the end zone, lost the ball and ended up not getting a touchdown.
But turning around for a few yards while running into the end zone? That’s just a kid having some fun.
Football is an emotional game, and people get excited about scoring. Look at what Philadelphia receiver DeSean Jackson did when he scored against the Cowboys — stopping short of the goal line to turn around and fall in for a score.
Before getting on to Wright about his celebration, remember his is only 17 years old.
How would you have reacted if you scored a touchdown to seal a berth in the state title game? I know at that age I probably would have celebrated in style, too.
