Designer adds personality to dresses

GALVESTON — Designer Miwa Sakashita, whose elegant gowns are known for simple lines, adds some personality of each duchess in the Knights of Momus Ball to her gowns.

GALVESTON — The Rosenberg Library’s children’s department will launch several free activities this month.

Interactive story times begin at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 15 and continue through Dec. 1 at 2310 Sealy Ave.

Through stories, songs and movement, babies, toddlers and preschoolers are introduced to the pleasure of books.

Each weekly theme-based program focuses on a high interest topic for young children.

Storytimes are a fun and relaxed way for youngsters to develop pre-reading skills and get familiar with the library.

To maximize the story time experience, arrive a few minutes early so your child can adjust to the surroundings.

After the program, visit the children’s department to check out books, DVDs and CDs to take home.

Library cards are available to patrons of all ages at no charge.

New this season are Second Saturday programs. Two time slots are offered for each program date.

The 10:30 a.m. program is geared for families with children ages 2 to 6.

The 2:30 p.m. program is geared for families with children ages 7 to 12.

All ages are welcome to either program and families can choose the time most convenient to their schedule.

“Paws to Read!,” Saturday, kicks off the series. Children are encouraged to bring along a favorite stuffed animal companion to this pet lovers festivity.

In conjunction with “Serious Fun,” the Oct. 9 program is dedicated to two upcoming evening performances at The Grand 1894 Opera House, “Giggle, Giggle Quack” by Doreen Cronin (Oct. 12) and “The Pigeon Party,” based on the series by Mo Willems (Nov. 10).

One free family pass will be given away to each of these performances.

Free books, courtesy of Developmental Momentum Inc., will be given to children attending the Oct. 9 program.

“Colorful Tales and Artistic Adventures,” Nov. 13 combines colorful story characters with creative art projects.

Breakfast with Santa is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and Elves Workshop at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 11.

Make any Saturday special by bringing the family to the library for the best free entertainment on Galveston Island.

The library is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

This resource, available in three different reading levels, offers a variety of articles, colorful photographs, maps and a dictionary.

Other homework aides include “The New Book of Popular Science” and “Lands and Peoples.”

Access these two sites by first clicking on Grolier Online. Children can watch videos of books via the E-Library through BookFLIX and Tumble Books.

Houston Area Digital Media Catalog offers downloadable e-books, DVDs and audio books The E-Library also is accessible from the computer lab on the library’s mezzanine.
