Swingin' brings history, hits and hoots

Set in swinging ’60s London, “Shout! The Mod Musical” follows the trials and tribulations of five nameless women who bond over magazine advice.

Virgin Mary painting found on wall in downtown

Published September 4, 2010

GALVESTON — While many Galvestonians are mystified by the way in which the island works, some are more concerned with the mystery of the Madonna of Mechanic and 21st streets.

Who painted her picture, what is the significance of its location, and when was its little downtown grotto created?

Kay Sandor, a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch’s school of nursing, was so puzzled by the vision that she took a cell-phone picture of it to show her friend Mary Beth Bassett, who’s president of the board of directors at Galveston’s Holy Family Catholic School.

Bassett was equally baffled and immediately called on The Daily News.

We must confess, however, that we have no idea of the painting’s origin.

In the spirit of open information, though, we intend to find out.

So, we ask, does anyone know the answer? Do you know who painted the Virgin Mary in an alcove at the former Two Moody Plaza Building on the corner of Ship’s Mechanic Row? Do you know when or why?

It would be heavenly to know the answer so, if you can shed any light on the matter, please call 409-683-5210.
