GALVESTON — The University of Texas Medical Branch helps patients and their families cope with the major life changes as a result of a stroke.

Democrats petty, childish, in need of direction

Published June 24, 2010

After two weeks of opinion articles written by Democrats, I’m hoping The Daily News gives me, a Republican, the same opportunity to have my guest column published. I normally don’t do this, but it seems the personal attacks will keep on coming if someone doesn’t call this kind of behavior out.

This is in response to Lloyd Criss’ guest column “Democrats’ NASA rally was a huge success” (The Daily News, June 3). I have several problems with what I read.

Mr. Criss mentions a comment by a machinist that our “elevators don’t go to the top.”

Then Mr. Criss himself said we “are all wet” and the “lunatic fringe.” Wow. This is the best the Democrats can do for a leader in Galveston County?

To personally attack me — without having ever met me — is at best, childish behavior, and most certainly uncalled for. Yet there are things that concern me even more. So let’s get to it.

First, there weren’t 400 Democrats at the rally. In fact, the police estimated 300 in total, and that would be about 150 for them and 150 for us. Yes, we had the same amount of people turn out for our rally as theirs, and we didn’t need a party, food and music to do it. Just a group of concerned folks who want to keep jobs in Texas, and that’s the only reason we needed to gather and stand in the pouring rain to make our point.

Yes, it’s true that they were under a covered pavilion and we were out in the rain, but that only serves to show the dedication and determination of our concerned citizens. Instead, Mr. Criss wants to turn us into an angry mob of “fringe lunatics” that supports tea parties and Glenn Beck.

Unlike the Democrats, we don’t need an occasion to throw a party to get our people out. Just the things coming down the pike are enough for us to get out and show our concern.

On that note, in a previous letter, Jeanie Bond, a big Democratic supporter, suggested we were invited to stand under the pavilion with them and join forces (“NASA needs parties to work together,” The Daily News, May 20). To set the record straight, no one from their group invited us, spoke to us or listened to us. Which is OK, because freedom-loving, truth-seeking folks like us never would stand in solidarity with a party like yours — the same party that handed out pocketknives to children at the League City music fair, while our party was handing out voter registration cards.

Our job, as citizens of this great nation, is to call out our government when it’s doing things to harm America. Not hide behind the bad behavior and continue to support a government, which is out of control because we cannot admit we made a mistake in voting these people into office.

The future of our country is infinitely more important than trying to save face.

So, Mr. Criss, why don’t you stop with the pettiness and childishness and lead your party? They’re obviously in need of some direction.

Gina Gentile lives in League City.
