Speaker to address prep for health care reform

Published June 1, 2010

TEXAS CITY — Navigating through the changes coming as a result of federal health care reform will be the topic of a business luncheon Wednesday.

Shannon Meroney, director of state government relations for Aetna insurance, will be the speaker.

Meroney’s job includes advising Aetna’s clients on what to expect. That’s something Jimmy Hayley, president of the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce, hopes she can do for business owners in Galveston County.

“We wanted someone who can give an honest assessment but not take sides on the politics,” Hayley said.

The chamber is sponsoring the meeting.

“We just wanted someone to come in and present the facts. The changes will affect everybody eventually, and we need to know what to expect.”

While most of the changes don’t take effect until 2014, Meroney noted in an interview with KUHF radio that some will start in September.

One provision will provide for guaranteed policies for children under 19, even with pre-existing conditions, Meroney said.

Hayley said the chamber will have information on the timelines for provisions of the reforms.

The information was compiled by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Hayley said.
