Swingin' brings history, hits and hoots

Set in swinging ’60s London, “Shout! The Mod Musical” follows the trials and tribulations of five nameless women who bond over magazine advice.

Historic homes tour wraps up this weekend

Published May 7, 2010

GALVESTON —The Galveston Historic Homes Tour continues this Saturday and Sunday.

This year’s theme is “Going Green: What’s Old is New Again” with an emphasis on historic green architecture — building methods developed before the luxuries of electricity, running water and natural gas. High ceilings allowed air circulation; southern exposures allowed for prevailing winds; transom windows allowed light to flow through the house; shell walkways allowed rainwater to absorb into the earth; cisterns caught rainwater for drinking, cooking, bathing and irrigation.

The goal of the tour of 10 homes is to raise money and support for the work of the Galveston Historical Foundation.
