Trial to begin in 4-year-old boy's slaying

Published January 5, 2010

JAMAICA BEACH — District Court Judge Wayne Mallia rejected a defense attorney’s motion to suppress statements made by his client and some of the evidence collected in the investigation into the murder of a 4-year-old Jamaica Beach boy in 2005.

Daniel Gray is charged with killing Kraig Jenkins, the grandson of Gray’s girlfriend, who is already in prison on a 45-year sentence for the boy’s death.

Jamaica Beach police and emergency crews answered a call in December 2005 of a loud disturbance in the apartment Barbara Ann Bawarsky shared with Gray. Inside, they found what they later called a “meth lab,” as well as Jenkins’ body.

Jury selection in Gray’s trial is scheduled to begin today. The trial is scheduled to behind next week in Mallia’s 405th District Court.
