Fishing reports pour in from weekend anglers

Published May 26, 2009

Monday, the Memorial Day weekend fishing reports came in all day, and it is obvious the weather did not hamper everyone’s fishing. With all of the reports, we will postpone other fishing news until later in the week.

Starting the weekend early, Troy Moore fished the South Jetty three days in a row beginning Thursday.

The first trip included his dad, Stanley, and they ended up with 10 trout and a red. Friday and Saturday, he fished with his mother, Netha, and a friend, Curt David. Their two-day catch included 57 trout, six reds (retaining two) and a pompano.

Ron Little and Stuart Ellis waited out the stormy weather Saturday and hit the South Jetty during the afternoon. Using free lined live shrimp for bait, the anglers caught 14 trout in the 17- to 24-inch range.

Ruben Toong was treated to a nice 40th wedding anniversary by his son, Frankie, who hosted his father, brother, Ruben Jr., and his brother-in-law, Cosmos, to a guided fishing trip by Capt. Rick Kraft.

Fishing areas out of the Galveston Yacht Basin, the family celebrated the big anniversary by catching 33 Spanish mackerel to 29 inches, along with a speck and sheepshead.

Wade fishing the west end of the island Saturday was Thomas Mendez of Houston.

His first stop was the bay side near the big water tower close to San Luis Pass where he caught two trout using live shrimp for bait. Later that day, he tried the surf and ended up with two sharks to 28 inches.

Sunday, James Johnson, along with his wife, Brenda, and friend, Vic Boiles, fished several spots including the railroad bridge, Pelican Island, the concrete ship Selma and both the north and south jetties.

Most of the action came from the Selma and jetties where the group caught a variety of fish including sand trout, hardheads, whiting, reds to 37 inches, croaker, blacktip sharks and stingrays.

The party boat New Buccaneer under the direction of Capt. Garrett King fished 60 miles offshore this past weekend with 85 passengers.

Their catch included five rockhinds, two pogies, 300 red snapper (released), 275 vermilions, 22 lane snapper, two kings, two amberjacks, a ling, squirrelfish and a 145-pound hammerhead shark.

The Thomas Conti group of eight fished offshore Monday on a 38-foot private charter boat and found lots of action 45 miles southeast of the jetties.

Using a variety of baits including ice fish, cigar minnows and ballyhoo, the Dallasites caught 12 king to 36 pounds, 21 sharks, the largest being a bull shark estimated to weigh more than 100 pounds, six ling to 38 pounds, two dorado in the 12-pound category, 31 red snapper (released), two grouper and a number of other reef fish.

Conti said it was the first time he had used circle hooks for bottom fishing and now prefers them over typical J-hooks.

To get your catch in the Reel Report, phone Capt. Joe Kent at 409-683-5273, or send an e-mail to reel.report(at)galvnews.com. There’s no charge for this service.
