Today’s Houston Smiley-La Marque football game was canceled Thursday morning when officials from both schools decided the short preparation time would not benefit either school.
The game will not be rescheduled since both the Mustangs and Cougars will enter district play next week.
This week was also supposed to be homecoming week for La Marque (4-0), the No. 1 team in Class 4A. LMISD officials announced earlier this week that the ceremonies will be rescheduled for the Cougars’ regular season finale against Channelview Nov. 4.
The open week allows La Marque to give quarterback L.J. Castile an extra week to recover from the separated shoulder he sustained in the Cougars 20-19 win over Ball High Sept. 3.
La Marque opens District 23-4A play at Santa Fe next Friday at 7 p.m.
Hurricane Rita’s presence last week has wreaked havoc with the area football schedule, leaving just two games on tap for tonight.
Ball High will open their District 24-5A season when the 3-1 Tornadoes host 1-3 Clear Brook at Courville Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m. O’Connell Consolidated welcomes Mount Carmel for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Weis Field.
Friendswood, Santa Fe, Dickinson and Texas City will be off this weekend. Clear Creek will resume play Tuesday night at Alvin (7:30 p.m.).
Hitchcock’s open date is this week.
The odds of Bay Area Christian’s game at Beaumont Cathedral are slim. Beaumont suffered considerable damage from the storm, making it unlikely school officials will be able to get the 7:30 p.m. game in.
