GALVESTON — The Galveston Symphony Orchestra will perform selected compositions from Franz Schubert, Sergei Prokofiev and Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice St.
The Galveston Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Richard Pickar, celebrates its 30th season with a program selection of invigorating composers.
The programs range from the baroque to contemporary that may be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.
Franz Schubert was a prolific composer, creating more than 600 songs — sometimes even several songs in one day — that range from lively and happy to sad.
His compositions are noted for their strong piano accompaniment, which acts as an equal partner in the composition. Schubert also left a legacy of chamber music.
The Galveston Symphony will perform Schubert’s “Rosamunde Overture.”
Ukrainian pianist Sergei Prokofiev was a master of the orchestra, showing talent in writing music for drama and dance.
“Lieutenant Kije Symphonic Suite” is a composition among his film music and strikes a familiarity with audiences by its sleigh bells that are frequently played at Christmas time.
Prokofiev collaborated on a number of performance pieces, including “War and Peace,” an opera, and “Cinderella” and “Romeo and Juliet” for ballet.
The concert finale,” Scheherazade, Op. 35,” was considered a staple of the classical music repertoire of Russian composer Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov.
While embracing folk song throughout his career, he became a self-educated master of Western methods, which he incorporated into his work while a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, further enriching his techniques of composition and orchestration.
