TEXAS CITY — A handcuffed prisoner fled from a police station garage and eluded capture for about four hours, authorities said Friday.
The prisoner was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of Hunter Drive on a misdemeanor theft charge, Sgt. Joe Stanton, a Texas City police spokesman, said.
The man had municipal warrants and had stereo equipment in his car that the owner identified as stolen, Stanton said.
As the officer prepared to enter the jail with his prisoner, the man pushed the officer, hopped a wooden fence and disappeared, Stanton said.
Hitchcock police found the escapee during a 2:55 a.m. Friday traffic stop in the 8700 block of state Highway 6.
The man was a passenger in the vehicle, Stanton said.
The man was then booked into the jail without incident, Stanton said.
All of the charges against the man were misdemeanors, Stanton said.
