PEARLAND — The Gators got their first win of the season Thursday at the prestigious McDonald’s Texas Invitational.
Dickinson rolled past Atascocita, 61-37. Dedrick Archie scored a season-high 21 points while Kenny Harris was right behind him with 19. Ivory Marks added 14.
Atascocita (1-1) was coming off a win against a good Klen Forest team.
“That was a good barometer for us and the kids really played well,” Dickinson coach Mike Tucker said. “Atascocita was a good team and we controlled the game.”
The Gators didn’t have as much success in their second game, falling to No. 14 North Crowley, 96-65. Archie again led Dickinson in scoring with 17. Harris and Marks had 13 and 12, respectively.
Tucker said he was pleased with his team’s 1-2 start. They played two of the toughest teams in the state in North Crowley and No. 1 Yates for the two losses.
“We’re learning,” Tucker said. “And getting better for when district comes.”
Dickinson will compete in the Silver bracket on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. The Gators play again later in the day.
The McDonald’s Invitational is the largest tournament in Texas with 48 boys teams. It includes some of the best teams in the state.
“It’s a great tournament to find out where you stand and what program you want to be,” Tucker said. “It’s really a good thing to get a win, but also a learning process to prepare for district.”
