Anglers should prepare for high tide levels

Monday, the Galveston area is forecast to experience some unusually high tide levels. Anglers with boats docked along the upper Texas Coast and the Galveston Bay Complex should be alert to possible tide levels up to more than 4 feet.
In addition to flooding of low-lying areas, damage to boats improperly secured can occur. Loose items on docks and piers should be either secured or moved to higher ground.
In the past, tide levels of this magnitude, outside of the prime time for hurricanes, have caught me by surprise and on each occasion ice chests, chairs and fishing equipment were washed away.
Before leaving this topic, I want to commend my associate Leigh Jones for an outstanding article in Saturday’s edition of The Daily News warning readers of the potential effects of this event.
Fishing continues to be excellent; however, we will just have to wait and see how this week’s tropical system in the Gulf affects it.
Night fishing under the bright moonlight has been good.
Clayton Cody and Jason Burdine fished the submerged lights around Jones Bay and landed a mixed catch of fish that included 15 reds and eight specks.
Most of the fish were undersized; however, the anglers managed to retain three slot reds.
The fish were caught from Cody’s boat named Penny, after his dead grandfather from who he inherited the boat.
Matt Johnson and Cecil Ramsey fished the gas wells off Eagle Point on Friday and landed limits of reds, along with 12 specks. Live shrimp fished deep under popping corks caught the fish.
Shirley Pike, Fatboy’s Bait Camp, reported good fishing from their pier.
Jeff Flasik, Lawrence Bonnie and Regis Plater each caught a limit of flounder from the pier, along with sand trout and rat reds.
Vicki Pike wants to remind everyone The Fish Spot on Moses Lake is carrying live bait. Pike reported action continues in Moses Lake, as flounder are beginning to move.
David Jackson and Danny Lowery caught a limit each, along with two reds.
Jimmy Young, Gene Flores and Jamie Flores all had limits of flounder, with a 12-pound saddle blanket among their six fish. Live fingerling mullet accounted for all of the fish.
The CCA-Texas Galveston Chapter is having its general membership meeting Wednesday at Mario’s Restaurant on 61st Street. Speakers will be the hosts of the TV show Veterans Outdoors, along with Capt. Steve Hillman, of Hillman Guide Service, who will talk about fall and winter fishing patterns. Hillman always gives interesting and informative presentations.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. For information, contact Rich Toberman, 281-787-4888.
To get your catch in the Reel Report, phone Capt. Joe Kent at 409-683-5273, or send an e-mail to reel.report(at)galvnews.com. There’s no charge for this service.
