Obama Bashers Hit Out At Bush, Too
How misguided and uninformed Nancy Kessling’s letter “Obama bashers have such short memories” (The Daily News, Oct. 22) was.
First, the independents and conservatives that are protesting what President Barack Obama is doing are the same ones who protested the poor management of the government and financial issues under George W. Bush.
The fact that we’re using the financial crisis to push ourselves further and further into socialistic policies is not due to the fact that Bush messed up — it is due to the fact that the solutions are being pushed by a self-avowed socialist.
This does not mean I approved of Bush’s handling of the financial mess — it was the voice of the independents and conservatives that yelled the loudest about Congress allowing the reduction in home-loan standards.
Just because we are now complaining about Kessling’s precious savior, Obama, does not mean we have changed our points of view.
We’re still against socialistic policies and bigger government. We don’t like them when they are pushed by Bush or Obama.

Readers continue to respond to the recent guest column by Ivana Atkins, including those taking umbrage and one with personal knowledge of her relationship with America.
Health Care So Mean In Communist Country
Ivana Atkins’ guest column “Americans don’t know meaning of socialism” (The Daily News, Oct. 17) reminded me of an extended stay in Bucharest, Romania some years ago.
After a while, I came to know the locals.
One member of a family was hospitalized.
Guess who provided that patient’s food and bed sheets?
It certainly wasn’t the hospital district!
How about the patient’s parents?
Do we suppose Atkins would want to buy new linens and canned food with her capitalistic money and help the needy in what was a wonderful form of socialistic health care?

Ivana Proud To Serve And To Be One Of Us
Ivana Atkins isn’t a provincial babushka-wearing Macedonian with dirt between her toes.
She is very well educated and enjoys the title “Professor” in Macedonia.
She speaks and writes seven languages — Macedonian and Russian even have separate alphabets.
In two weeks’ time, Ivana will take the oath of citizenship and become a full-fledged American — just like all Americans.
There is a certain sparkle in her eyes when we talk of her being a Yankee, just like her son and husband.
For her, this is an honor and privilege that we who were born here will never quite understand.
Ivana is the mother of Brooks, Jim and my grandson. She is married to my son Frosty.
She served the United States of America in Afghanistan, which is where she and Frosty met.
Folks would have to know Ivana to see how playful she can be.
Her guest column included a little of that, I think.
She can defend herself. However, it seems that people see what they want to see when reading something they disagree with rather than comprehending what was actually written.

Middle Class Could Fill New Public Houses
Galveston Housing Authority executive director Harish Krishnarao must look at the land he’s planning to develop and see “Field of Dreams” because “build it and they will come” seems to be his plan.
He’s wasting his time recruiting elsewhere to fill the proposed new units.
There is a market right here on his doorstep — the middle class!
Most of us are hanging by a thread and barely making it.
Insurance costs are already up and property taxes are going up, we can bet.
Krishnarao should concentrate on luring us away from our pesky financial obligations and all the tedious maintenance on our somewhat dilapidated homes.
When we finally give up and “walk away” from our properties, we won’t have far to go.
No wonder “Supernanny” is looking for frazzled families in our area.
It’ll be more like a vacation for us. Save me a corner unit with a hint of an ocean view!
Speaking of vacations, once the middle-class tax base has moved to the new Galveston Housing Authority resort, the city can raise the hotel-room-occupancy tax.
Perhaps it can succeed in running those annoying tourists off, too.
