Nearly a year after Hurricane Ike displaced the congregation of Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church from its sanctuary, the assembly will rededicate the restored facility Sunday.
“We are excited about this day,” the Rev. Salatheia Honors, co-pastor, said. “It was a long time coming. We experienced many ups and downs along this journey. It’s not just our celebration alone to savor. It belongs to friends and strangers who helped us in so many ways.”
The Rev. LaKesha Barnett will speak at Sunday’s 11 a.m. regular service, with Bishop Gregory G.M Ingram presiding at the 3:30 p.m. rededication service. The Galveston Heritage Chorale will perform.
The rededication service is intended to recognize those who helped Reedy rebuild after Ike. Honors said Faith United Methodist Church in Dickinson shared its building with Reedy and volunteers from Asbury United Methodist Church from Bossier, La., Memorial Drive United Methodist Church and Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in San Antonio all pitched in to resurrect Reedy’s historic auditorium.
The public is invited to attend the service at 2013 Broadway, Galveston.

The Crossing Foursquare Church in Texas City will have an “out-of-the-building” experience at 9 a.m. Sunday.
“Our church believes that we should be showing the love of Christ to people in our community who are struggling with great needs, and we need to demonstrate to those who have no relationship with Christ that they are loved and cared for by the people of God,” Tim Franklin, Crossing’s pastor, said.
The church is at 9300 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, No. 216, in Texas City.
