Trout, reds making area fishing news

Trout and reds are making the news in fishing, as flounder action appears to have slowed a bit.
Sunday, reports from the jetties, Bastrop Bay, West Bay, Pelican Island and Moses Lake indicated that action on trout and especially reds was good early in the day.
Let’s start with the jetties, where Kyle Fisher and his son, Gary, fished the South Jetty, Gulf side, and caught several bull reds to 40 inches. Gafftop and sand trout were the only other fish caught, and all of the fish were released.
Mike Palmer landed a nice bull red while fishing the surf off Jamaica Beach on Saturday. The fish measured 42 inches and was released successfully.
Roman Warner, 11, caught two croaker, two sand trout and a drum while fishing Moses Lake using live shrimp and cut bait.
The Pelican Island Bridge was a hot spot for sand trout and croaker Sunday morning, as Morris McNelly and Charles Sponsel landed a total of 36, made up of 26 sand trout and 10 croaker.
McNelly said the croaker were the largest he had seen in years, with the largest estimated to weigh more than 2 pounds. Live shrimp was the bait.
John Austin fished Bastrop Bay, near the Intracoastal Waterway, on Sunday morning and landed a limit of slot reds using a gold spoon with a pink buck tail. The action took place while fishing over shell.
Confederate Reef in upper West Bay produced 17 specks for Bobby Mitchell, Sterling Buckles and Willie Bob Smith. A large flounder, estimated to weigh 6 or 7 pounds, was lost at the boat. Soft plastics, mainly sand eels and Texas Trout Killers, were the baits used.
Fred Foster sent a note asking about Campbell’s Bayou. He has seen several reports recently of good fishing around the mouth and wants to know if the area is accessible other than by boat. Unfortunately, boats are about the only option for fishing Campbell’s. I am not aware of any other feasible access to the area other than by water.
Several notes and calls have been received from readers complaining about the fees charged by Seawolf Park for wade fishermen who just park there and do not use their facilities. Complaints regarding anything at Seawolf should be directed to the Galveston Park Board of Trustees, which manages the park on behalf of the city of Galveston. Their address is 306 22nd St., Suite 200. Lou Muller is the executive director, and any correspondence should be directed to his attention.
