The three incumbents on the Bolivar Peninsula Special Utility District were re-elected Tuesday night, but two challengers made it a close election. Five men were running for three spots on the utility district’s board with the top three vote-getters elected.
Jack Blume led the field with about 24 percent, followed by the board’s most veteran member, Al Altemus, and Dennis Stafford. Newcomers Shawn Pachlhofer and Jack Haigh were the odd men out with 18 percent and 16 percent of the vote.
The utility district board faces some huge challenges as the peninsula struggles to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Ike. With the customer base cut in half, the utility district may be forced to approve a hefty rate hike to pay off debt.
The board still has to hire a new general manager after former manager Jennifer McKnight resigned in the summer.
