B’nai celebrates 26 years with Rabbi Kessler

Congregation B’nai Israel in Galveston will honor Rabbi Jimmy Kessler at an event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday at 3008 Ave. O, in Galveston.
Kessler is well-known for his civic activities, scholarly writing and his storytelling prowess. He even has his own Wikipedia entry, which notes his authorship of the book, “Henry Cohen: The Life of a Frontier Rabbi.”
“He has wisdom,” temple vice president Lana Croft said. “He has knowledge. He has stories. He’s Rabbi Kessler.”
The program will feature Janice Rubin singing special selections.

After a year of rebuilding after Hurricane Ike, Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church is reopening at 4 p.m. Sunday.
“The congregation of the Historical Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and I could never have foreseen the damage Ike was going to inflict on the our beautiful church home,” pastor Norris D. Burkley Sr. said. “But now, one year and three weeks later, God has blessed us and the city of Galveston with a now-newly erected edifice to serve all people in this community and beyond. We will lift up the name of Jesus. And God bless the city of Galveston.”

Texas City’s Oktoberfest by the Bay will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at Memorial Lutheran Church, 2021 29th Ave. N., in Texas City.
“Oktoberfest by the Bay will bring back all the popular items like our authentic German dinners, prepared by the members of our church,” Pam Naranjo, who is one of the event’s organizers, said.
“Dinners include sausage, chicken, German potato salad, red cabbage, bread and dessert. You also will find sausage-on-a-stick, funnel cakes, snow cones, popcorn and cakes.
“We will have raffles all day, a silent auction, a beer booth, cake spin, a variety of vendor booths, games, train rides, a moonwalk, slides and dancing.
“It will be a great way to spend a Saturday.”
