HITCHCOCK — Have you ever been hurt? Have you ever hurt someone? Have you ever been mistreated or misunderstood?
Those questions are behind the gospel play “Hurt Hurts” by Rosalyn Ross-Preacher, of Galveston.
The play will be presented at 6:30 p.m. today at the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, 6333 state Highway 6, in Hitchcock. Admission is $12.50 at the door.
Preacher, who grew up on the island, is a member of West Point Missionary Baptist Church and has been writing gospel plays for more than 20 years.
“Hurt Hurts” had several inspirations, including Hurricane Ike and the recession.
“It seems that everybody is struggling, dealing with issues and hurting,” Ross-Preacher said. “The Lord woke me up one morning at 2 a.m., and that’s what led me to write this particular play.”
Ross-Preacher has written several plays, which include “Oh, God I’m Sorry!,” “God’s Grace and Mercy,” “Is My Living in Vain?” and “Carry Your Corner.”
Sheila Mack, Kevin Tillmon, Audrey Hawkins, Jerrod Ross, Yuneka Sanford, Jackie Johnson, Charles Ross, Tammy Chachere, Chad Baxter, André Robinson and Robert L. Tubbs, pastor of the New Direction Baptist Church of Houston, are the actors picked by Ross-Preacher to convey her message of hope.
“Most of the actors are placed in my spirit as I’m writing,” Preacher said. “I’m always looking for people with a great sense of humor, who love to have fun and believe in God.
“If you plan to attend, you can expect to laugh, cry and, hopefully, leave with help and hope for your hurts.”
