Three Galveston County teams have advanced to the area round of the University Interscholastic League playoffs this week.
The La Marque Cougars and Texas City Stingarees will continue play in the Class 4A, Division II playoffs on Friday. The Hitchcock Bulldogs will play their Class 2A, Division I playoff game on Saturday.
The defending state champion Cougars got off to a start in the postseason with a 31-6 victory over El Campo on Saturday. La Marque (9-2) will take on Lumberton (10-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown.
This is the first time that Lumberton has advanced to the postseason. The Raiders defeated Smiley 35-7 in the first round.
Texas City (10-1) was able to take out Bay City 28-16 in their bi-district playoff game. The Stings will take on Dayton (8-3) at 7 p.m. at LaPorte’s Bulldog Stadium.
The Broncos have won seven games in a row, including a 49-7 victory over Crosby in the opening round of the playoffs. Dayton and Texas City met in the area playoffs last year, with the Stings winning 35-21.
Hitchcock (10-1) pulled out an 18-13 victory over Edna on Friday. The Bulldogs’ next opponent will be Salado at 6 p.m. Saturday at Navasota High School.
Salado (11-0) defeated Hempstead 17-7 on Friday. It was the first time this season the Eagles had scored less than 23 points this season.
The Bay Area Christian Broncos and the Pine Drive Christian Eagles are also still alive in the TAPPS playoffs. Bay Area (11-0) will play Austin Hyde Park. Pine Drive will play Lake Jackson Brazos. Time and location of those two games are yet to be announced.
