William Lamar Doyle
William Lamar Doyle, born the 31st of August, 1933, in Galveston, Texas, died on Wednesday, the 4th of November, 2009, in Houston, Texas.
Lamar grew up in Galveston, Texas, attended the University of Houston on a golf scholarship and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin. He married Anita Moore in 1955 and after serving in the U. S. Army at Ft. Lee, Virginia, they returned to Texas where he began his career in the banking industry. Lamar and Anita settled in Houston where they raised their five children. Lamar began a career in the maritime industry in 1976 when he went to work in the harbor tug business as President of Intracoastal Towing and Transportation. ITT merged into Suderman and Young in 2002, where Lamar continued his career as President, CEO and Chairman. He was a leader in the industry, serving on the boards of G & H Towing, Houston Maritime Association, The Greater Houston Port Bureau, Texas Waterway Operators, and American Waterway Operators. He was as at ease in the boardroom as he was in the engine room of a tug. Lamar was a member of Lakeside Country Club and The Galveston Artillery Club. He was an accomplished golfer, having been club champion of Galveston Country Club in 1951.He was an avid fly fisherman and loved attending The Houston Symphony. Above all he cherished his family. Friends, colleagues, and family were all blessed by his warm smile, contagious humor and kind words.
Lamar is preceded in death by his parents Loreen Teague and Dan P. Doyle. Survived by wife Anita; sons and daughters-in-law Doug and Sheryl, Dan and Joyce, and Brian and Susan; daughters and sons-in-law Rene and Mauri Pineda, and Anne and Larry Charpentier; daughter-in-law Pat Doyle; brother and sister-in-law Dan and Andrea Doyle; brothers-in-law Charles and Linda Moore, Paul and Jane Moore, and Bart and Sue Moore; grandchildren Douglas, Caroline, Joseph, William, Bridget, Lamar and Charlie Doyle, Katherine, Andres and Carlos Pineda, Drew, Thomas, and Jane Charpentier, Kathleen and Grant Markman.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock Monday the 9th of November, 2009, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston where The Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr. and The Rev. Canon Edward L. Stein will officiate. Following the service, friends are invited to a reception in Bagby Parish Hall adjacent to the church.
