Rumor Circuit: Rumors are making the rounds that the League City Town Center store left vacant last year by Circuit City is soon to get a new tenant.
But officials with Property Commerce, which developed the shopping center on the southeast corner of Interstate 45 and FM 646, are mum about the potential tenant. One tipster reported that the 20,293-square-foot store might soon be home to an indoor shooting range.
Richmond, Va.-based Circuit City shocked League City officials in November last year when it announced it would close the store that had been open less than a year. A few months later, Circuit City closed its remaining 567 U.S. stores.
Circuit City blamed a weak economy and upheaval in the credit markets and other issues for its problems. Want to talk about it? Visit Buzz Blog at galvnews.com.
Setting the table: In other League City Town Center news, activity at Logan’s Roadhouse signals the eatery is planning to open any day now. Officials at the restaurant’s Nashville, Tenn.-based headquarters have not specified an opening date.
The chain is known for mesquite-grilled steaks, ice-cold longnecks and “bottomless buckets” of in-shell peanuts. Stay tuned.
Berry busy: Meanwhile, watchful readers report bustle at two League City eateries that are soon to open in Lighthouse Plaza, Marina Bay Drive and Lighthouse Boulevard. Berryhill Baja Grill, a Houston chain offering south-of-the-border cuisine, and Lenny’s Sub Shop, a Memphis-based chain serving up Philadelphia-style subs, both are under way. No word on opening dates. Stay tuned.
How sweet it is: As promised, Santa Fe resident Kari Powers has opened Cakes N More, 12625 state Highway 6 in her hometown.
Cakes N More, which opened Wednesday, is starting out as a dessert-style bakery but possibly will add breads later, Powers said.
Living up to its name, the bakery offers all sorts of cakes, including German chocolate, Italian cream and pumpkin, to name a few. Cakes N More also will serve up cupcakes, cheese cakes, pies, cookies, muffins and dessert breads. For hours, call 409-927-2626.
To the Pointe: Looks like island apartment complex The Pointe, 7301 Stewart Road on the island, has a date with demolition crews. Representatives have met with city planning officials to discuss tearing down and rebuilding the complex, which, like other major multifamily units around the city, was badly damaged by Hurricane Ike a year ago.
Before the storm, The Pointe had 168 units. Owners plan to rebuild a 144-unit complex but with 72 “lockout units.” Lockout units are two separate units next to each other and separated by a door. Each of the lockout units contain a bathroom and kitchen area. The units can be rented together as a larger apartment or separately as an efficiency. Owners of the complex are applying for all the permits. Michael Gaertner Architects will design the new complex. Stay tuned.
Buzz blooper: An item in Tuesday’s Biz Buzz should have said Texas Prudential Insurance Co. in 1954 purchased the building that housed the original Ball High School, 2115 Winnie St. in the island’s downtown. Texas Prudential later merged with Western & Southern of Cincinnati, which later sold the building to American Indemnity.
Biz Buzz appears Tuesdays and Thursdays. We welcome your tips and suggestions. Call 409-683-5248 or e-mail laura.elder(at)galvnews.com.
