GALVESTON — A man accused of shooting at a police officer remained jailed Wednesday on a felony evading charge, but his wife said he wasn’t carrying a gun.
Police charged Courtney Terrell Jones, 27, of Galveston, with evading arrest with a vehicle. His bond was set at $60,000.
A Galveston police spokesman said Tuesday that officers tried to stop Jones when he failed to signal a turn and that he evaded police in a car and on foot in the 3400 block of Sealy Street.
Capt. Walter Braun said Jones shot at officer Chad Powers, and Powers returned fire. Neither man was hit, Braun said.
Police searched through hurricane debris piles in an alley but haven’t revealed whether they found a weapon.
Menaisha Johnson said she has been Jones’ wife for 13 years. She said Jones is not one to carry a weapon, because his brother was shot dead in a street crime seven years ago.
Johnson said her husband was severely beaten and can’t open his eyes.
Jones’ booking photo shows swelling around both eyes.
Capt. Henry Porretto said Wednesday that Jones suffered his injuries fighting with police.
Porretto declined further comment, saying the case was still under investigation.
Braun said police called for a medical helicopter after finding Jones bleeding from the mouth and said he was under suspicion of ingesting narcotics.
Johnson said police found no drugs or a gun.
Johnson said police were not cooperative when she tried to learn her husband’s whereabouts, and she made a trip to a Houston hospital only to learn he’d been released.
“I feel like no matter what anybody did, even if you kill somebody, they have no right to beat you until you’re unconscious,” Johnson said.
