Editor’s note: The following is the text of a letter sent by Galveston reident and former city councilwoman Jackie Cole to the members of the city’s tax-increment-reinvestment-zone boards of trustees.
I am requesting that you as an entire board review the invoices associated with the Aug 6 city council RDA workshop rather than just the invoice review subcommittee of your zone.
I can’t imagine that you thought the costs associated with that workshop would be so high.
Please review your contractual obligations to see if the amount of support and whether three consultants and two attorneys were necessary, required and authorized for a meeting that was not even a posted TIRZ meeting.
Please make sure that real business of the TIRZ was conducted and the expenses were justified, valid and properly authorized before recording your vote on recommendation for approval or denial of these costs to the taxpayers.
The amount invoiced to all four TIRZ by Marsh Darcy and Vinson & Elkins just for this meeting was nearly $16,000.
Also, please consider enacting policies that will prevent these large unexpected expenses in the future.
