Some lawmakers are considering slot machines and casino-style gambling as a way to help fund public schools.
It’s A Wonderful Way To Get Some Tax Relief
I am full in favor of gambling. People will gamble, whether it is pitching pennies, pitching horseshoes — anyone is going to find a way to gamble.
To legalize it in Texas, it would enhance our income.
I disagree with the people who think it is going to cause crime. Crime is going to happen whether there is gambling or whether there isn’t gambling.
The citizens of Texas and this county need some tax relief, and I see that as a wonderful way to get some tax relief.
The city council won’t vote for the senior and disabled people relief, so I am pushing for gambling as a relief for taxes.

Legal Gambling Is Long Overdue
In reference to the gambling that may come up for a vote, Texas long ago should have made gambling legal.
There is nothing wrong with it. It would make money for our schools. It would take some of the burden off the senior citizens who are on fixed incomes, and all these new taxes are going to hurt us.
Maybe if we had gambling, we wouldn’t have so many cars in Louisiana and Oklahoma at the gaming palaces.

Bring On Casino Gambling
I am for the gambling, casino gambling especially.

Just Look At Those Texas Plates In Louisiana
For those who are against gambling, they need to take a trip to Louisiana and see all the Texas license plates that are out there — and that is not counting the buses that are coming from all areas of Texas.
About crime, we have that already without the gambling. Crime is everywhere, but $3 is a drop in the bucket to treat someone for side affects compared to the games and revenues.

Gamblers Are Going To Gamble
What people don’t understand is all the money is already leaving this state. These people are already gambling. They are not going to stop.
All we need is that money gambled here. It won’t make any difference in the social impact of this, because these people are already gambling.
It is not going to make any difference at all.

Dickinson Independent School Districts on Saturday will decide the fate of two bond proposals.
A ‘Yes’ Vote Is An Investment In Kids
On April 2, the residents of Dickinson Independent School Districts will vote to address the current and future school facilities requirements for our children.
Dickinson ISD over the next 10 years will experience explosive growth due to new housing activity, which could result in 15,000 homes. Strategic planning is a priority to be able to manage the future growth.
The DISD Facilities Task Force committee made up of 39 Dickinson residents unanimously approved the proposal to build a new junior high school to replace the 50-year-old McAdams Junior High, to build a new elementary school and a new fifth-sixth grade school to help relieve the current overcrowding and also plan for the growth in student enrollment. A new transportation center, agriculture facility and a new football stadium are also proposed.
The $85 million bond issue will have a minimal impact on your taxes and residents who are disabled or 65 plus will have no tax increase.
A yes vote for the bond issue will be a good investment for the children and residents in Dickinson ISD.

Here’s a sampling of what people in Galveston County are saying about Terry Schiavo.
What Do You Have To Do To Make Your Wishes Clear?
In the interest of protecting my daughters, I want it clearly on the record: If I end up on life support, unplug it. If I am ever diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state, pull the feeding tube.
OK, girls, maybe if it’s in the newspaper that might count as clear and convincing evidence of my wishes. Now, if that comes to pass, maybe folks who have never met any of us will leave you alone to do your awful task in peace.

Document Your Wishes
I sympathize with each side of the Terri Schiavo debate and agree that both factions have legitimate points that should be considered.
I’ve read many articles about this case and have seen the extensive media coverage on television. The conflicting points of view between the husband and Terri’s parents are what bother me most.
The husband states Terri did not want to live by artificial means, and her parents say otherwise. Most of us have told those closest to us what our wishes are.
From a personal perspective, I know I would not want to be kept alive under the same circumstances as Terri Schiavo. What individual would like to continue to live without having any comprehension of their surroundings?
Who would want to have a family member subjected to this kind of attention or to observe a loved one in a vegetative state for years?
Like an earlier letter stated, a pet can be euthanized but a human being can’t. Are we less deserving a dignified and peaceful means of ending our suffering? Not in my opinion.
Because of all of the controversy surrounding this, I have obtained the documents necessary to make sure neither my family members nor I have to go through a media circus like this.
I encourage anyone that has strong feelings about this either way to make sure you have documented what your wishes are. If you choose to live by artificial means or feeding tubes, let it be known.
My sympathy goes out to Terri’s family. I hope she gets her wish very soon.
Donnie Kelemen Galveston
Courts Didn’t Stand Up For The Right To Live
If you think the president or elected officials run this nation, you are wrong.
Raw judicial power of the court has demanded that Terri Schiavo starve slowly to death.
Not on life support, she only requires nutrition. Even her mother, Mary, isn’t allowed to place ice chips on Terri’s tongue.
Article 3 of the Constitution states Congress has jurisdiction over the courts.
Unaccountable judges — and as in the Supreme Court, unelected — dominate. A Supreme Court that allowed the abortion of 39 million unborn babies since 1973 is quietly allowing euthanasia of handicapped, helpless people.
Aging “baby boomers” will strain the ailing Social Security system. In short, there is a need to get you dead.
Amazing energy and displaced rage exists to have Terri die. Do we not have a right to life? Do we not have the right to live?
Not if the courts and judges flex muscles and continue to dominate unchecked.
Gerry Townsend Galveston
President Should Use His Authority
Open memo to President Bush:
You are not constrained by the judges because you have a legal right to save the poor woman, Terri Schiavo.
This right is based on precedent — actions taken by past presidents.
With a stroke of a pen, past presidents have pardoned individuals who were subject to final actions of the judges.
These pardons were not challenged by the judiciary. Final action by the president prevailed.
Terri Schiavo has been condemned to die by the action (or non-action) of the judges.
You have a legal right and moral obligation to pardon Terri Schiavo from the death sentence and place her in protective custody.
Your action cannot be challenged by the judges since you have legal right to exercise pardon. America and humanity will be grateful.
