GALVESTON — More than 60 daytime and some 40 overnight jailers are keeping the county jail on Galveston Island operating, assisted by regular deliveries of much-needed essentials by companion public service officials.
More than 1,100 inmates were at the jail Tuesday, with room for about 150 more. Officers at the facility received 60 toiletry kits shipped in by Texas City police officers. The kits were donated by Christ Church Fellowship’s state Highway 146 congregation.
Along with the toiletries, the jailers received cases of soft drinks, wipes and other “luxuries” to help ease their workload on the amenity-starved island.
