Bays, jetties continue to produce flounder, reds

Saturday, Dickinson, Chocolate and Trinity bays, along with East and West bays, were where a lot of the fish were caught. Pelican Island and the Intracoastal Waterway, along Bolivar, continue to be givens for easy limits of flounder, and the jetties still are holding some nice reds and gafftop.
Now, let’s take a look at some recent fishing reports.
Capt. Billy Howell, Howell’s Saltwater Adventures, hosted his dad, Billy Sr., along with Donnie Christopher, of Christopher Electric, and Buck Wilson to a productive trip while fishing Trinity and East bays.
Using Strike Pro Husky Vibes in raven red and lemon drop and Red Shad Goobers, Howell’s guests landed 26 trout to 3 pounds. The fish were caught while drifting over scattered shell in 4 to 6 feet of water.
Jonathan Griffin, of Jersey Village, and Steve Soule, of League City, fished West Bay with Capt. Greg Francis, Saltwater Assault Guide Service.
Using top waters and soft plastics, they caught and released lots of trout and reds while retaining 12 trout and four slot reds. The action came while wading in knee to hip-deep water.
Capt. Michael LaRue fished upper Galveston Bay and found plenty of action for his guest, John Boone.
Using Goober soft plastics and Strike Pro baits, Boone limited out on trout to 3 pounds by 9 a.m., along with a 30-inch red that was released. Another 20 to 30 trout were caught and released between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
LaRue said no other boats were in the area, and he said fishing will get even better.
It will be interesting to see how it can get much better than what we have now.
In Dickinson Bayou, Jose Aceves and Juanita Beard caught a Texas Grand Slam. Five specks to 18 inches, four flounder to 17 inches and a 23-inch red. A number of large sand trout to 17 inches were landed as well.
My good neighbor, Dr. Bob Rose, has been making some good catches while fishing Offatts Bayou. Rose and a fishing buddy caught a number of nice specks with several measuring more than 20 inches, along with slot reds and a 25-inch Spanish mackerel.
With mackerel still around, it is obvious the water has not cooled much.
Anthony Tovar, 7, fished with his grandmother, Bonnie DeVoe, of Bolivar, on Saturday and caught a half-limit of flounder. His single fish was a nice one, according to DeVoe’s report.
Vicki Pike reported good sand trout action in Moses Lake during the weekend, along with catches of reds and flounder. Terry Bourgeois caught five flounder, retaining two, and five sand trout.
Mike Mitchell and Larry Smith combined for 20 sand trout, a flounder and a red. Live fingerling mullet and dead shrimp were the baits used by the Moses Lake fishermen.
We have had several anglers comment about the large size of sand trout being caught recently. That is good news, and I hope we see the same pattern with croaker before winter sets in.
