What’s that? Readers want to know about construction at 2622 Marina Bay Drive in League City. The 9,000-square-foot building is soon to house Dr. Charles Polsen’s South Shore Surgicenter. Polsen, a plastic surgeon, will practice at 2525 South Shore Harbour Drive until the new center opens in January. Polsen specializes in cosmetic, reconstructive and hand surgery.
Pet project: Meanwhile, popular North County veterinarian Dr. Helen Stehouwer last week opened a 6,000-square-foot Parkwood Animal Hospital, 1301 W. Parkwood Ave., in Friendswood. The hospital also offers boarding services. For information, call 281-648-7387.
Hitting the spot: The Fish Spot is casting for a Saturday opening, permits permitting. The Fish Spot, 4009 20th St. on Moses Lake in Texas City, has been closed for a month for a complete makeover. Popular among anglers, the Fish Spot serves up hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, salads and, on occasion, Cajun fare, along with live bait. It also will be under the management of Vicki Pike, known in these parts as “the bait lady.” Leslie and Mary Melghem own the property. When it returns, the Fish Spot will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. For opening status and other information, call 409-943-4444.
All the trimmings: Foodies have reason to give thanks. The island’s Catering by Benno will begin Monday accepting orders for Thanksgiving dinners. Hurricane Ike, which struck a year ago, forced the popular catering firm, 112 28th St., to cancel sales last year.
Baked and Cajun-fried turkeys will be available, along with ham, prime tenderloin, boiled shrimp and all of the traditional side items. For information, call 409-762-3666.
Good hair day: After a year styling hair at temporary space on 45th Street, The Salon Group is returning Tuesday to its longtime shop at 6109 S1/2 on the island. For information, call 409-766-7773.
Under the spotlight: The island’s Captain Jack’s Beach Bar, 1702 Seawall Blvd., is about to get more entertaining. At this writing, crews were putting the final touches on a new stage for live entertainment, manager Abraham Cox reports. The stage is above the pool deck and will be over the bartenders’ heads, Cox said.
The popular bar, boasting one of the largest palapa roofs in the nation, is at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort. The idea was to have the stage ready in time for the Lone Star Rally, a yearly event expected to lure thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to the island beginning Thursday, Cox said.
Downtown doings: The island’s downtown continues its post-Ike recovery with the return of old businesses and the debut of new ones.
First, Jacque and Pamela Passino plan a Sunday return of their Emporium at Eiband’s, 2201 Postoffice St. The Emporium will be a consortium of different vendors, antique dealers, jewelers, artists — much the way it was before the building was swamped with storm surge in September 2008. Dealer spaces still are available. Meanwhile, Pamela Passino plans to open her design and interiors business, Jacque’s Interiors & Design, at 2416 Postoffice St. by year’s end. Jacque’s, specializing in French antiques, will offer interior design services, a gift boutique and several new lines of contemporary and “beach friendly” furnishings and accessories. Stay tuned.
Brian and Kristen Ethridge are aiming for Friday to open their new business — Galveston Outfitters, 2425 The Strand, on the ground floor of the Panama Hotel Building.
Galveston Outfitters will offer island-style clothing, including Guy Harvey and Panama Jack lines. Galveston Outfitters will cater to island residents, Kristen Ethridge said. “Our goal is not to be touristy,” she said. “We really want to get local business.” The store also will exhibit works from Texas artists. Look for the couple, who manage the tourist shop Ocean Oso’s on Stewart Beach, soon to come out with their own line of clothing, she said. For information, call 409-765-5263. Island Realtor Debbie Olsen represented the couple in the lease agreement.
Relax already: In a rare offer last week, Buzz asked businesses to say what they’re doing to drum up business.
Some promotions rub the right way. The island’s Hatmaker Chiropractic, which has made its post-Ike return to 1021 61st St., is offering an introductory massage — 30 minutes at $17. As a bonus, Dr. Daniel Hatmaker is offering a free spinal exam. Meanwhile, look for the Hatmaker Chiropratic to expand services, including Botox and other aesthetic treatments provided by Dr. Efrain Soto of Park Lakes Family Medicine in Friendswood. Efrain will take appointments at Hatmaker Chiropractic in the near future. For information, call 409-740-6800.
