GALVESTON — A Galveston man who police said was sought in connection with a stabbing and robbery at an apartment complex was in critical condition Tuesday night after being shot.
Police later charged a resident of the apartment complex in the shooting.
Police said Eddie Brown Jr., 53, of the 4400 block of Avenue K, was the prime suspect in a robbery at knife-point of someone at an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Sealy Avenue.
Just hours later, about 4:45 p.m., Brown was descending a staircase in the 4400 block of Sealy Avenue when a resident of the complex began walking up the stairs, police Lt. D.J. Alvarez said.
The resident, Darnell Curry, 49, told police he was aware of the earlier stabbing and robbery.
Police said the two men knew each other.
Curry said Brown was carrying a box cutter and feared Brown would attack him, Alvarez said.
Police reported several shots were fired at Brown. At least one shot hit Brown, police said.
Officers could be seen Tuesday evening marking off shell casings in the middle of 43rd Street.
Alvarez said investigators still were working Tuesday night and suspected Curry may have chased Brown into the street, reloading at least once.
Police charged Curry with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bond was set at $80,000.
Alvarez said the wounded man was taken for surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
The stabbing victim from the robbery suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
