Night fishing continues to be the topic of most of the fishing reports received from readers. Not many anglers are on the water during the day. Water clarity is good; however, the wind continues to discourage boaters from trying the open bays and jetties.
Tuesday night, Patrick Lynam and Ben Haden fished Offatts Bayou and found only one spot illuminated enough to fish. There they caught two specks, one measuring more than 24 inches, along with a flounder.
Last weekend, Graham Guerrero, James Dodd, Andrew White and Marcus Mendoza fished the canals at Jamaica Beach at night using their kayaks. Their catch for the evening included several specks, sand trout and flounder to more than 4 pounds.
Sunday night, Harry Curtis and Tom Rockwell fished from the boat ramp on 61st Street where they caught six whiting, lots of hardheads and an undersized red. Dead shrimp was the bait.
June 6 is the date set for the Galveston Bay Bash Fishing Tournament sponsored by both the Galveston and Mainland Chapters of The Coastal Conservation Association. The event is headquartered at Bubba’s Sports Bar this year, which is located just across the causeway from Galveston at 110 Interstate 45 South.
There are three categories with three places within each. The categories are trout, reds and flounder. There is a kids division, as well, for youngsters up to age 10. Entry fee is $20 for adults and kids fish free.
Entry forms may be obtained from Bubba’s, the tournament headquarters; Serious Tackle, 14065 Gulf Freeway, in the Gulfway Plaza in La Marque; and on the island at Treasure Island Trophies, 4528 Ave. S.
Bob Straitwell of Houston called in to ask if the Seawolf Park Fishing Pier is going to be removed, along with the pavilion. Wednesday, The Daily News reported on plans to tear down the Seawolf Park pavilion and replace it with another structure. It is my understanding that the fishing pier will not be affected by this plan and will continue to operate at the park. We will keep you posted on any changes that may occur.
