GALVESTON — A representative from Interlochen Center for the Arts will visit Galveston Island Arts Academy on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
During the visit, the representative will answer questions about educational and performance opportunities for young artists at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan. The event is open to the public.
The center includes a summer camp and a fine arts boarding high school offering learning opportunities in creative writing, dance, motion picture arts, music, theatre and visual arts.
Summer camp programs are available to students currently enrolled in any grade level between third and twelth.
Younger students are introduced to new artistic experiences, while high school students work with faculty to achieve their artistic potential.
About 2,500 students from 40 different countries and all 50 states come to Interlochen each summer to learn, create and perform with other young artists.
In a typical year, more than 100 students from Texas attend the camp.
The fine arts boarding high school combines comprehensive and challenging college-preparatory academics with rigorous training in the arts.
About 500 students from around the world attend the school each year. Since 1980, more than 39 Presidential Scholars have come from Interlochen Arts Academy — more than from any other high school in the United States.
A leader in arts education and performance for more than 80 years, the center has made a global impact on the arts.
Alumni include Norah Jones, Jewel, Josh Groban, Anthony Rapp, Felicity Huffman, Lorin Maazel and about 10 percent of the musicians in the nation’s major orchestras.
The center received the National Medal of Arts in 2006 in recognition of eight decades of excellence in arts education and performance.
