Tree of Lights benefits Hospice

GALVESTON — The Hospice Care Team will light its Tree of Lights atop The Daily News’ building in Galveston on Tuesday.
The Christmas tree, which is visible from the causeway, has been a holiday tradition and a symbol of hope and life since 1989.
The ceremony is one of a series in Galveston County.
Hospice is a philosophy of care that provides for the physical, emotional and spiritual care for both the patient with a life-limiting illness and their families. Hospice celebrates life by working to make each day the best for patients and families.
Each bulb on the Christmas tree is a symbol of the life of someone that a donor wants to honor. From Tuesday through Jan. 1, lights can be purchased in memory of a loved one, or to honor a special person or event.
Each light also reflects a donation to the Hospice Care Team, and the Tree of Lights is the organization’s major fundraiser.
The Hospice Care Team, the area’s only nonprofit hospice, provides care to people who are terminally ill and to their families.
The organization provides care to all — regardless of ability to pay.
While most care is covered by insurance and Medicare, Hospice Care Team spends about $400,000 a year on unfunded care and depends on donations from the public. The organization serves Galveston and Brazoria counties, as well as parts of Harris County.
The honorees or memorials will be published in The Daily News in January.
