‘Electric Theatre Radio’ brings back variety show

George Lee, of Galveston, sits in front of a computer, guitar and electronic keyboard each week to perform a comedy variety show, complete with interviews of local politicians and pundits, parodies of news events and even commercials for fictional do-it-yourself organ transplant kits.
“You can do it in the comfort of your own home without those annoying doctors,” he tells listeners.
Then he transitions to Galveston City Council news, singing the woes of “Budget Mash” to the tune of “Monster Mash.”
Lee’s wife, Brenda, also lends her voice to the broadcast, calling out occasionally, “George, it’s time to take your medicine!” She produces a more serious-sided segment, carrying a remote digital recorder into area restaurants to do behind-the-scenes interviews.
When the program is edited and complete, it becomes an old-fashioned variety show, complete with skits, faux (and real) commercials, songs and a smattering of serious news.
Lee calls it the “Electric Theatre Radio Hour,” broadcast on Galveston radio station KGBC 1540 AM Saturday mornings, and posted on his Web site, www.georgedoug
laslee.com.
“It’s just fun,” Lee said. “It’s the fastest moving hour on the radio.”
He is producing the 20th episode this week, with his wife interviewing chefs in the Galveston College culinary arts program.
As for Lee, he will be assuming a slew of roles as he sings and performs his way through the news.
To introduce a song, he may become Elliot Elliot, a somber announcer from fictitious public radio station KOMA.
For a description of a dim-witted criminal escapade, he may perform multiple voices for a mini-drama.
“I love the variety of it,” he said. “I literally have this stage where I can do anything and it goes out over the air and over my Web site.”
The Web site has recorded 18,000 hits a month since the show started in May.
