GALVESTON — Postal service mail carriers hit the streets Monday for the first time in two weeks.
They were delivering to all the residential and commercial customers they can reach, said Dave Lewin, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service.
The temporary pickup site at the Gulfway Plaza in La Marque, 14057 Delaney Road, will continue to hand out mail to people who cannot receive it at their former addresses.
Residents who want to receive mail at their island homes and businesses need to make sure they have a mail box or other receptacle that can be used for mail deliveries.
Customers with post office boxes at both island post office locations must continue to pick up mail in La Marque.
People who want to continue to pick up their mail in La Marque need to tell postal service employees at the temporary site to continue to hold their service, Lewin said.
Although lines at the La Marque site have been long, resuming deliveries on the island should help make pickup operations more efficient, Lewin said.
A mobile facility is now operating at the Bob Lyons Post Office, 5826 Broadway, to collect outgoing mail and provide retail service. It will be open between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Broadway facility is scheduled to reopen in five months. The Main Post Office, 601 Rosenberg, had heavy flood damage. Officials do not know when it will reopen.
Residents who have permanently moved off the island or plan to be at a temporary location for an extended period of time should fill out a change of address form. The forms can be picked up at the La Marque site or can be filled out online at usps.com.
Address change should take only about thee days, Lewin said.
