Santa Fe 20, Sam Rayburn 3
SANTA FE — For the second straight season, the Santa Fe Indians have started the season on a winning note.
Santa Fe’s new offense had plenty of success and the defense was stout in the Indians’ 20-3 win over the Sam Rayburn Texans on Friday.
Joseph Walton rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Garet Davidson completed 12-of-17 passes for 95 yards and a score in the victory.
“Statistically, we felt like we dominated the game,” Santa Fe coach Jay Buckner said. “It actually didn’t show up on the scoreboard as high as we would have liked, because we should have scored three more touchdowns. We are very pleased with this performance, though. It’s a good way to start the year.”
Defensively, the Indians allowed just 171 yards and eight first downs. Star defensive end Shane Sobnosky also scored on a 12-yard fumble recovery in the third quarter to seal the victory for Santa Fe (1-0).
“Defensively, we had some huge stops inside the red zone,” Buckner said. “We kept them from scoring twice, and another time we limited them to just a field goal. We got real strong inside when we needed to.”

Friendswood (1-0) actually led 36-20 in the fourth quarter, before Dayton scored a couple of late touchdowns to make it close. Overall, Friendswood had 352 yards of offense and 17 first downs, to Dayton’s 320 and 15.

Justin Branch had a monster night for Texas City (1-1), rushing for 271 yards and three touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 4, 7 and 20 yards.
The game was tied at 14 at halftime and remained that way until the fourth quarter. Following an Alvin field goal, Branch gave Texas City the lead with a 20-yard run. Alvin answered with a 35-yard run by Bryce Jackson, leading to Harper and Gutierrez’s last minute heroics.

Kingwood 16, Creek 13
The Wildcats lost a heartbreaker at home, as Kingwood kicked an 18-yard field goal with one second remaining in the game.
Creek (0-2) had led 13-3 in the first half, after a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jarryd Garza to C.J. McElroy and a pair of field goals by Mario Gurgel.
However, Kingwood rushed for 363 yards in the game, leading to the second-half comeback.
