GALVESTON — The Galveston school board will welcome two familiar faces and a new one, according to unofficial results Tuesday.
Two incumbents — Kelly Chambers and Carol Greaney-Wurst — fended off challenges to earn second terms, while Norman Pappous defeated Phil Lipnick for a seat on the board.
Chambers, the incumbent in District 1A earned 45 percent of the vote to beat challengers Heidi Lutz, a training specialist, Shelia Lee, a technical and educational writer and Derek Anderson, an artist.
“For me, it means that we should keep doing what we’ve been doing,” Chambers said. “We’re moving the district in a positive direction, and I think we have a good thing going.”
In District 4D, Greaney-Wurst got 48 percent, to fend off challenges from John Ford Jr., a senior at Ball High School, and Miguel Aleman, president of the Galveston chapter of the League of the United Latin American Citizens.
“I’m so excited — I can hardly believe it,” Greaney-Wurst said. “I just think we’re on the right track and we just need to keep going. We’re doing the right things. We’re thinking about our students.”
In District 3C, Pappous, an island business owner, secured 62 percent of the vote to beat Lipnick, director of the nonprofit Galveston Youth Creating Their Own Future and a specialist for a company that provides case management for Hurricane Ike victims. Incumbent Weez Doherty did not run.
“I’m grateful for the victory, and I hope all the citizens of Galveston will come together to make our district a better school system,” Pappous said.
Trustees serve four-year terms.
