Local Official Elected To Head Area Council
DICKINSON — Dickinson City Councilman Kerry Neves was recently elected chairman-elect for 2009-10 of the board of the Houston-Galveston Area Council.
Neves has been one of two representatives on the council’s board of directors representing home rule cities since 2003. The area council is a voluntary association of local governments and local elected officials from the 13-county region.

Book On Vaccines Features UTMB Staff
GALVESTON — A new textbook on vaccines for biodefense and emerging infectious diseases was authored by world experts on these diseases, including researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Drs. Alan Barrett and Lawrence Stanberry co-edited the 1,488-page text, “Vaccines for Biodefense and Emerging and Neglected Diseases,” which was published by Academic Press. Barrett is director of UTMB’s Sealy Center for Vaccine Development, and Stanberry is the former director of the vaccine center and now a faculty member at Columbia University. Nineteen of the book’s 69 chapters were written by UTMB researchers.

Officials To Speak On Storm Recovery
Several officials from Galveston County are scheduled to testify today in Austin before the House Committee on Hurricane Recovery, which is hearing recommendations on the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.
The committee is schedule to hear testimony from Dr. David Callender, president of the University of Texas Medical Branch; County Judge Jim Yarbrough; Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas; Lynn Cleveland, superintendant of the Galveston Independent School District; and John Kelso and Mike Doherty of the Sealy and Smith Foundation.
The committee is reviewing recommendations for storm recovery filed by state Rep. Craig Eiland of Galveston. The recommendations are included in House Bill 6.
